About the position

The Mission Advancement Advisor at the American Heart Association is a key role focused on fundraising efforts in Chicago and the Midwest. This position is responsible for securing significant donations, cultivating donor relationships, and providing leadership in major giving initiatives. The Advisor will work collaboratively with market staff to engage current and prospective donors, aiming to meet personal fundraising goals while contributing to the overall mission of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Secure donations of $100,000 or more while moving donors to their highest level of engagement with the mission.
  • Cultivate relationships and solicit support from current and past American Heart Association donors.
  • Identify, cultivate, and solicit an assigned portfolio of prospective donors.
  • Complete a minimum of 100 face-to-face donor visits each fiscal year.
  • Make at least 24 qualified asks for six-figure gifts annually.
  • Build and implement individual strategies for donors and prospects in portfolio.
  • Collaborate with the Mission Advancement operations team to secure project information and build proposals.
  • Meet personal fundraising goal of $1M annually through various giving mechanisms.
  • Collaborate with Field Directors on strategies to identify and solicit major gift prospects.
  • Attend and support region and market activities and social events.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in fundraising or sales, with at least one year focused on major gifts.
  • Experience in identifying and developing major giving opportunities that align with organizational mission.
  • Minimum of two years of experience working with complex donors representing $100,000 or more in revenue.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to travel overnight approximately 10% of the time, with an additional 60% local travel.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of the philanthropic landscape for at least three years.
  • Experience using donor relationship management software, such as BBCRM Blackbaud, Dynamics, or Raiser's Edge.
