About the position

The Medical Laboratory Technician I position at Christus Health involves performing clinical testing in various laboratory sections, including Blood Bank and Microbiology. The role is essential for ensuring accurate and timely laboratory results, which includes quality control, performance improvement, and preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment. The technician will also handle clerical duties and blood product dispensing, while adhering to safety and compliance standards.

Responsibilities

  • Performs clinical testing in assigned laboratory sections such as Blood Bank and Microbiology.
  • Conducts specimen collection, handling, and processing, including obtaining blood specimens via venipuncture and fingerstick.
  • Recognizes and reports critical values according to established policies and procedures.
  • Operates laboratory automated analyzers and performs tests in various sections including Hematology, Chemistry, and Microbiology.
  • Performs quality control and records results following CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHO guidelines.
  • Completes daily and periodic preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment and documents actions taken.
  • Assists in training new associates and students in laboratory practices.
  • Utilizes laboratory information systems (LIS) and hospital information systems (HIS) for reporting results.
  • Follows established protocols for safety, infection control, and compliance with hazardous materials.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution.
  • Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved by ABHES, NAACLS, or equivalent.
  • No prior experience required for graduates of an accredited clinical laboratory training program.
  • Six months of approved clinical laboratory experience, including rotations in Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, and Hematology, is preferred.
  • Must meet the requirements defined in the CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with laboratory automated analyzers.
  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS).
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT).
