About the position

As a Mobile Mechanic at Kinross Gold Corporation, you will play a crucial role in the maintenance and repair of heavy diesel equipment at the Fort Knox site, located near Fairbanks, Alaska. This facility is recognized as a center of excellence, particularly noted for its cold weather heap leach operations. Your primary responsibilities will include repairing and maintaining a variety of heavy equipment such as shovels, loaders, graders, dozers, haul trucks, and service vehicles. You will utilize hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment to ensure that all machinery operates efficiently and safely. In this position, you will be expected to gather technical information necessary for performing repairs, troubleshoot and diagnose issues with electrical and hydraulic systems, diesel engines, drive trains, and undercarriages of both mobile and stationary equipment. You will also be responsible for field-testing equipment to evaluate performance and conducting welding and cutting tasks as needed. Your role will require you to operate and inspect equipment to diagnose problems, ensuring that all repairs are successful and that waste materials are disposed of properly. Additionally, you will prepare computer-generated work orders, manage parts and supplies, and maintain accurate records for the Accounting Department. Preventative maintenance checks and inspections will be a regular part of your duties, and you will be expected to report findings to your supervisor and take appropriate actions. Training other employees and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental policies will also be part of your responsibilities. Punctuality and regular attendance are essential, as is the ability to work safely in all areas and identify potential safety hazards. This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, with vocational training or experience in mining or heavy industrial equipment maintenance preferred. You will need to possess a valid driver's license and be willing to work in adverse weather conditions. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are necessary, along with the ability to work effectively in a team environment. Shift work, overtime, and availability for holidays and weekends are also required.

Responsibilities

  • Gather technical information as needed to perform the job at hand.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, modify, fabricate, and repair electrical and hydraulic systems, diesel engines, drive trains, and track equipment undercarriages.
  • Utilize specialized testing equipment and electric systems knowledge to perform repairs.
  • Operate and inspect equipment to diagnose problems and verify repairs were successful.
  • Ensure proper disposal of waste materials.
  • Prepare computer-generated work orders and manage parts and supplies from the warehouse.
  • Prepare all associated paperwork for the Accounting Department and for smooth shift transitions.
  • Perform equipment walk around and conduct preventative maintenance checks and inspections.
  • Report findings to supervisor and take appropriate action.
  • Train other employees as needed.
  • Responsible for all tasks related to the preventative maintenance program.
  • Repair and replace components as needed.
  • Weld as needed.
  • Maintain punctuality and regular attendance.
  • Meet or exceed established performance expectations set by management.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures, including safety and environmental policies.
  • Identify potential safety hazards and work with management to correct them.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred with applicable vocational technical training and/or experience in mining/heavy industrial equipment maintenance preferred.
  • Ability to read and write instructions and perform simple mathematical calculations.
  • Working knowledge of manuals and diagnostic tools.
  • Thorough understanding of A/C and hydraulic troubleshooting/repairing.
  • Strong working knowledge of electrical, fuel, and cooling systems and ability to troubleshoot/repair them.
  • Ability to use hand tools and trade-specific tools.
  • Willingness to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Must have own hand tools of up to ¾" drive to perform necessary maintenance.
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work with others in a team environment.
  • Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the attached physical demands sheets.
  • Availability for shift work, overtime, holidays, and weekends.
