About the position

The Moderate Special Needs Teacher - Permanent Substitute position at Andover Public Schools involves providing tailored educational support to students with moderate special needs. The role focuses on delivering individualized instruction, modifying curricula, and collaborating with educational teams to ensure that students meet their specific educational goals as outlined in their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).

Responsibilities

  • Provide teamed, small group, or individualized instruction according to students' IEPs.
  • Modify and adapt curricula, materials, and physical environments to meet individual student needs.
  • Complete diagnostic academic testing as required.
  • Participate in IEP Team meetings for assigned or newly referred students.
  • Act as Case Manager for designated students, maintaining communication with parents and staff.
  • Prepare progress reports, annual review narratives, and individual education plans.
  • Write specific IEP goals and objectives for assigned or newly referred students.
  • Design and implement behavior support plans for selected students.
  • Consult with school staff on modifying curriculum and teaching styles for special education students.
  • Attend special needs staff meetings and designated school staff meetings.
  • Submit budget requests, inventory data, or required reports as requested by the Program Head.
  • Provide small group or individual instruction to special needs pupils as prescribed in their educational plans.

Requirements

  • Valid Massachusetts Teaching Certification: Teacher of Moderate Special Needs.
  • Experience instructing students with learning disabilities, social emotional disabilities, autism, and other special needs.
  • Experience in adapting materials and curriculum for special needs students.
  • Strong curriculum and academic background.
  • Ability to consult with general education teachers regarding the learning needs of special education students.
  • Experience in designing and implementing behavioral management programs.
  • Experience with an inclusive model of instruction and willingness to team-teach.
  • Experience utilizing computer technology within the classroom preferred.
