The mold changer is responsible for setting molds and dies, as well as setting up and adjusting compression, injection, and transfer machines used to mold plastic materials to specified shapes according to blueprints and designs. This role is critical in ensuring that the production process runs smoothly and efficiently, producing high-quality molded products that meet customer specifications. In this position, the mold changer will read specifications to determine the necessary machine setup, including prescribed temperature and time settings. They will position, align, and secure assembled molds or mold components, along with machine accessories, onto the machine press bed according to guide marks. This involves using hoists, power tools, and hand tools to ensure everything is set up correctly. The mold changer will also attach connecting lines, such as air, oil, or water to the mold, and adjust controls to regulate the mold temperature. Once the machine is set up, the mold changer will set machine controls and turn dials to regulate the specified machine forming pressure and plastic curing time in the mold. They will start the machine to produce a sample product and then measure and visually inspect the sample for surface and dimensional defects using tools like microscopes, micrometers, and gauges. If defects are found, the mold changer will adjust the machine setup to eliminate these issues. Additionally, this role may involve repairing and maintaining machines and auxiliary equipment using hand tools and power tools. Depending on the type of machine setup, the mold changer may be designated as a Compression-Molding-Machine Setter or Injection-Molding-Machine Setter within the plastics industry.
