About the position

We seek a highly motivated scientist to join the Human Disease Modeling and Mechanisms (HDMM) team within the Human Assay Technology at Vertex Pharmaceuticals. The successful candidate will perform in vitro assessments of candidate compounds in genetically engineered cellular models. An ideal candidate will have experience with cell culture, molecular biology techniques, and cell-based assays. The role will include working with numerous cell lines simultaneously, so the candidate should be highly organized with a detail-oriented mindset. The applicant should be eager to learn new techniques needed to perform necessary experiments for the study. The applicant will be working closely with other scientists; excellent collaboration and communication skills are required. The responsibilities of this position include performing all aspects of mammalian cell culture, including media and buffer preparation, culture initiation, scale-up, maintenance, imaging, and cryopreservation of cells. The candidate will also be responsible for keeping accurate, timely, and reliable records including cell line inventory, notebooks, and all pertinent documentation. Additionally, the role involves performing various cellular and molecular biology techniques, including transfections, nucleic acid isolation, and PCR. The selected candidate will assist with automation protocols to streamline high throughput cellular assays utilizing liquid handling instrumentation (e.g., Hamilton), so experience with automation technology is a plus. Cellular assays include flow cytometry-based and colorimetric/fluorescence detection assays, and experience in flow cytometry and detection instrumentation (e.g., PheraStar, Envision or similar) is ideal. The candidate will present data to research teams during team meetings and perform other duties as assigned.
