About the position

Straight Arrow News is seeking a talented video editor to enhance our morning digital news output. This role is crucial as our reporters and producers require a video specialist who can craft elegant and crisp news video elements tailored for our website and social media channels. The ideal candidate will be responsible for assembling and delivering voice-over (VO) and sound-on-tape (SOT) elements for news packages, ensuring that our content is engaging and professionally presented. In addition to editing traditional video segments, the video editor will also focus on creating vertical video segments specifically designed for social media platforms. This includes re-purposing existing 16x9 video timelines into a vertical format that is optimized for mobile viewing. The role will also involve searching for and acquiring relevant video, images, and sound to enhance our video productions. When necessary, the editor will provide trims and fixes to recordings in the studio, ensuring that all content meets our high standards of quality. Furthermore, the video editor will select and provide featured images for our social media platforms and website, playing a key role in our visual storytelling efforts. The position requires a proactive individual who is not only skilled in video editing but also possesses strong organizational skills for effective project and media management. The ability to navigate both Windows and Mac interfaces is essential, as is a solid understanding of visual composition and framing. The ideal candidate will have a keen eye for selecting images that are strong, purposeful, accurate, intentional, and fair. Attention to detail is paramount, as is a self-starter attitude that embraces problem-solving in a fast-paced newsroom environment. A background in news, whether through education or previous employment, is preferred, as it will provide valuable context for the role.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Proficient editing video in Adobe Premiere timelines with multiple video/audio/graphics layers
  • Good organizational skills with regards to project & media management
  • Strong computer skills, ability to navigate Windows and Mac interfaces
  • Understanding of visual composition/framing
  • Ability to identify strong, purposeful, accurate, intentional, and fair images
  • Strong attention to detail and pride in precision for all aspects of the job
  • Self-starter, proactive in problem solving
  • Understanding of motion graphics over video
  • News background preferred, via school or previous employment
  • Eagerness to work in a fast-paced newsroom environment with a patient and calm demeanor
