About the position

The Mortgage and Consumer Underwriting Manager is responsible for overseeing the underwriting process for mortgage and consumer loans. This role ensures that all applications are evaluated accurately and efficiently while managing a team of underwriters. The manager establishes guidelines and maintains compliance with regulatory standards, contributing to the overall effectiveness of the underwriting department.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, mentor, and motivate staff, conducting regular meetings and performance evaluations.
  • Schedule staff according to business needs, including training and professional development opportunities.
  • Approve staff time off according to bank policies.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, training, and education to staff.
  • Manage performance and employee relations issues with confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Attend interviews and recommend hiring/staffing decisions to HR.
  • Share relevant information with staff through regular meetings to address questions and concerns.
  • Meet one-on-one with staff members at least bi-monthly to review performance and progress on goals.
  • Maintain awareness of compliance, market conditions, and best practices to create and implement policies and procedures.
  • Assess loan applications to determine borrower eligibility based on creditworthiness, income, and financial stability.
  • Analyze credit reports and scores to evaluate lending risk.
  • Identify potential risks associated with loans and recommend appropriate lending programs and terms.
  • Examine borrowers' financial statements, employment history, and debt-to-income ratios to assess repayment ability.
  • Ensure all loan approvals comply with legal regulations and lender policies.
  • Collaborate with loan officers and stakeholders to streamline the loan approval process.
  • Prepare reports on loan applications and outcomes for management decision-making.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, business, or a related field preferred.
  • 3 to 5 years experience with mortgage and consumer underwriting required.
  • Management experience preferred.
  • Strong understanding of mortgage products, underwriting guidelines, and risk assessment.
  • Excellent analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Strong leadership and communication abilities.
  • Proficiency in analysis software/computer skills (Encompass preferred), including Word and Excel.
  • Ability to make decisions with little supervision.
  • Positive interaction and communication skills with all staff levels.
  • Effective presentation skills.
  • Compliance with applicable laws and regulations, including the Bank Secrecy Act.

  • Experience in managing a team of underwriters.
