About the position

As a Mortgage Consultant at Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union (MSGCU), you will play a pivotal role in the origination of first mortgages. Your primary responsibilities will include conducting initial pre-qualification interviews, preparing loan application packages, and ensuring all necessary documentation is in order. You will communicate policies for the extension of credit in accordance with MSGCU and secondary investor guidelines, while also meeting production expectations. Your focus will be on providing exceptional service to members, prospective members, builders, developers, and real estate agents in a prompt and professional manner. In this role, you will implement effective strategies to ensure that members have a positive experience with MSGCU and our products and services at every touchpoint. You will process new loan applications and perform loan origination activities, which include accurately reading, interpreting, and applying financial and numerical information to the loan file. Adherence to federal and state regulations, as well as MSGCU policies and procedures, is crucial. A strong emphasis will be placed on consultative phone selling, prospecting, and member service, focusing on phone mortgage origination through various lead sources. Your responsibilities will also include cultivating and maintaining external referral sources by attending loan closings, networking events, and following up on leads. You will travel throughout the branch network to strengthen relationships and collaborate with assigned branch teams to increase referrals and drive mortgage loan growth. Additionally, you will provide consistent feedback and communication to applicants regarding their loan status, ensuring they are informed throughout the process.

Responsibilities

  • Originate first mortgages by conducting initial pre-qualification interviews and preparing loan application packages.

  • Process new loan applications and perform loan origination activities, adhering to federal and state regulations and MSGCU policies.
  • Engage in consultative phone selling and prospecting to maximize lead pull-through to closing.
  • Cultivate and maintain external referral sources through networking and follow-up activities.
  • Travel throughout the branch network to strengthen relationships and collaborate with branch teams.
  • Provide consistent feedback and communication to applicants regarding loan pre-approval and issues preventing approval.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 1 year of mortgage origination experience or 2 years of mortgage banking experience or relevant lending experience in other roles.
  • Associate's degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Accounting, or Finance is acceptable in lieu of experience.
  • 3 years of analytical finance experience may also be considered.
  • Nationwide Multistate Licensing System & Registry (NMLS) licensure is highly preferred.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Familiarity with secondary mortgage market underwriting, pricing, operations, and requirements.
