About the position

The Mortgage Consultant (Mortgage Loan Officer) at Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union is responsible for the origination of first mortgages, ensuring a positive experience for members throughout the loan process. This role involves conducting pre-qualification interviews, preparing loan applications, and adhering to credit policies while meeting production expectations. The consultant will engage in consultative selling, manage multiple responsibilities, and cultivate relationships with members and external referral sources to drive mortgage loan growth.

Responsibilities

  • Originate first mortgages by conducting pre-qualification interviews and preparing loan application packages.
  • Communicate policies for extension of credit in accordance with MSGCU and secondary investor guidelines.
  • Meet production expectations while serving members, prospective members, builders, developers, and real estate agents.
  • Process new loan applications and perform loan origination activities, ensuring compliance with regulations and guidelines.
  • Utilize consultative phone selling techniques to maximize lead pull-through to closing.
  • Cultivate and maintain external referral sources through networking and follow-up activities.
  • Travel throughout the branch network to strengthen relationships and collaborate with branch teams.
  • Provide timely updates and recommendations to branch team members regarding mortgage opportunities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; or a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Accounting, or Finance.
  • 1 year of mortgage origination experience; or 2 years of mortgage banking experience; or 3 years of analytical finance experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Familiarity with secondary mortgage market underwriting, pricing, operations, and consumer lending regulations.

Nice-to-haves

  • NMLS licensure is highly preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in consultative sales and effective follow-up.
