About the position

The Motor Vehicle Operator Trainer position at the City of Billings involves developing, planning, implementing, and coordinating training programs for Public Works motor vehicle operations. The role requires ensuring compliance with federal regulations, conducting training for new hires and current employees, and managing training documentation. The trainer will work closely with various divisions and staff to enhance safety practices and operational procedures, while also providing direct instruction in vehicle operation and safety protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, plan, implement, and coordinate training programs for Public Works motor vehicle operations.
  • Conduct employee training and retraining programs ensuring compliance with federal requirements.
  • Develop and update curriculums, lesson plans, and training materials.
  • Assist in the development and management of the Public Works Commercial Driver's License Training Program.
  • Provide training in both classroom and field environments.
  • Prepare employees for completion of licensing requirements including Commercial's Driver's Licenses with appropriate endorsements.
  • Manage technology and systems related to training programs and compliance activities.
  • Coordinate and oversee the maintenance of accurate training records and documentation.
  • Conduct CDL A testing for Public Works Maintenance Workers/Equipment Operators.
  • Assist with general safety training requirements per OSHA, NIOSH, and Montana Department of Labor Industries.

Requirements

  • Five years' experience in Training and Development, Occupational Safety, Business or Public Administration, Transportation, or a related field.
  • One year supervisory experience.
  • Experience in use of technology and computers, including Microsoft Office programs.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and writing skills.
  • Must have held a commercial driver's license, Class A, Type 1 with airbrake and tanker endorsements for a minimum of two years prior to beginning employment.
  • Five or more years of experience with light, medium and heavy equipment operation.
  • Must have Entry Level Drivers Training certification through FMCSA or must be obtained within ninety days of employment.

Nice-to-haves

  • A bachelor's degree in Training and Development, Occupational Safety, Business or Public Administration, Transportation, or a related field.
  • Experience with city government, state and federal regulations, and compliance.
  • Knowledge of motor vehicle regulations.

Benefits

  • Full-time position with a competitive hourly wage ranging from $28.67 to $38.40.
  • Work schedule from Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
