About the position

The Motor Vehicle Operator position at the Battle Creek VA Medical Center and Wyoming VA Clinic involves operating various patient transport vehicles under the Veterans Transportation Service. The role is essential for ensuring safe and timely transportation of patients to and from medical facilities, private healthcare locations, and other designated areas. The operator is responsible for adhering to scheduled routes, providing courteous service, and ensuring passenger safety during transit.

Responsibilities

  • Operate one or more types of patient transport vehicles, including emergency vehicles and vans/buses capable of carrying 8 or more passengers.
  • Drive predetermined and/or scheduled routes or special runs, arriving and departing from pick-up and discharge points at scheduled times.
  • Operate vehicle doors to allow passengers to enter and exit safely.
  • Read installation maps and assess road/traffic conditions to determine the safest routes.
  • Provide friendly, polite, and courteous service to passengers.
  • Enforce passenger safety and seatbelt use during transport.
  • Check ID cards to ensure authorization of passengers as required.
  • Safely load and unload patients and medical supplies, ensuring minimal disruption and maximum comfort during travel.
  • Use Mobile Data Computers (MDC) for assigned trips and duties daily.
  • Interact professionally with patients, families, and medical staff.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job.
  • Evidence of training or experience sufficient to perform the duties of this position is required.
  • Must possess a clean driving record, which may require submission of a driving report from the Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Ability to assist patients with various medical conditions and/or disabilities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in operating emergency vehicles or patient transport vehicles.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations.
