About the position

The Motor Vehicle Operator position at the Department of Veterans Affairs Butler VA Medical Center involves safely transporting patients, family members, and employees, as well as supplies and personal belongings, between various campuses of the VA Butler Healthcare System. The role requires operating gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles, performing operator maintenance, and assisting in grounds maintenance tasks. The position is full-time and reports directly to the transportation supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Operate gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles with a gross vehicle weight up to 26,000 pounds.
  • Perform operator maintenance on all vehicles operated, including monitoring fluid levels and checking tire pressure.
  • Drive station vehicles such as pick-up trucks and sedans to accomplish necessary workload.
  • Operate equipment utilized in patient transportation, including wheelchairs and stretchers.
  • Pick up patients from various locations and transport them to their destinations.
  • Transport patients' personal belongings, including oxygen tanks and medications.
  • Recognize when a patient or caretaker is in distress or unresponsive.
  • Operate street sweepers and landscaping equipment as needed.
  • Assist in grounds maintenance duties, including gardening and landscaping.
  • Provide assistance during the relocation of employees and patients within the medical center.

Requirements

  • Must possess a current and valid class C driver's license.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate vehicles safely and perform maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to recognize and respond to patient distress or emergencies.

  • Experience in operating specialized transportation equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols in patient transport.
