The Motor Vehicle Operator position at the Department of Veterans Affairs involves transporting patients for medical appointments using various vehicles, including vans and sedans. The role is essential for ensuring that patients receive timely transportation to and from medical facilities, contributing to the overall efficiency of the healthcare system. The operator is responsible for vehicle maintenance, route determination, and ensuring the safety of passengers during transit.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a variety of gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of up to 26,000 pounds.
  • Determine the best route for transportation, considering hospital activities and safety conditions.
  • Transport patients and family members, as well as supplies and equipment throughout the medical center and local area.
  • Ensure vehicles are not overloaded and perform required operator maintenance.
  • Maintain service records, delivery records, trip tickets, and compile accident reports.
  • Load and unload equipment, supplies, and parts from vehicles.
  • Check, count, sort, and stock materials as necessary.
  • Operate a forklift truck with a capacity of up to 10,000 pounds.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job.
  • Must possess a current and valid state Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement and air brakes.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the duties of the position through training or experience.
  • Ability to drive safely and interpret instructions and specifications related to mobile equipment operations.

  • Experience in operating larger vehicles such as buses or trucks.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures for transporting patients.
