The MRI Technologist operates magnetic resonance imaging equipment to produce cross-sectional images of patients' bodies for diagnostic purposes. This role is performed under the direction of the Chief of Radiology and the Imaging Services Director, allowing for independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative. The technologist is responsible for ensuring optimal diagnostic quality of patient care by utilizing efficient and safe processes. In this position, the MRI Technologist performs patient studies according to established protocols, which includes placing specified coils close to the area of interest. The technologist operates imaging and other equipment devices to provide quality diagnostic services, which involves keying commands to specify scan sequences into the computer, adjusting transmitters and receivers, and entering data on the camera's keyboard to photograph images. Additionally, the technologist interviews patients to explain the magnetic resonance imaging procedures, addressing any concerns they may have. A high degree of tact, courtesy, and poise is required when interacting with patients, staff, and visitors. Ensuring the safety of both patients and staff is paramount, which includes explaining safety protocols, requesting the removal of hazardous metal objects, alerting staff of potential dangers, and monitoring patients via closed-circuit TV. The MRI Technologist also plays a role in training and orienting new hires, as well as training MRI Technologists I in MRI procedures. In the absence of the MRI Supervising Technologist, the technologist may be required to direct, check, and train other MRI employees. Other related duties may be assigned as necessary.
