About the position

The Middle School Assistant Soccer Coach at Des Moines Public Schools supports the head coach in executing coaching responsibilities for the assigned soccer team. This role involves instructing participants in fundamental skills, strategies, and physical training to achieve individual and team success while promoting moral values, self-discipline, and sportsmanship among student-athletes.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Head Coach in the operation of the athletic program.
  • Coach and instruct players on the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of soccer as determined by the head coach.
  • Follow state, regional, and district regulations governing the athletic program.
  • Provide proper supervision of athletes at all times.
  • Participate in organizational meetings for team prospects and encourage potential athletes to join the sport.
  • Maintain eligibility forms, emergency data cards, equipment inventory, and other related duties as determined by the Head Coach.
  • Monitor the academic performance of team members to ensure eligibility requirements are met.
  • Model sports-like behavior and maintain appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators.
  • Participate in special activities including parent's night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies.
  • Follow and maintain knowledge of all District policies and procedures.
  • Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Attend staff development meetings, clinics, and other professional activities to improve coaching performance.

Requirements

  • Valid IA Coaching Endorsement or Coaching Authorization
  • Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
  • Coaching and/or leadership experience
  • Competency working in a culturally diverse environment or the willingness to acquire these skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of overall operations of an athletic program
  • First Aid and CPR certification
  • Knowledge of Conference rules and regulations.

Benefits

  • Stipend of $1764.00 for the position, prorated if the full season is not worked.
