About the position

Portland Public Schools (PPS) is seeking a dedicated and talented Middle School Social Studies Spanish Immersion Teacher for a full-time position at Cesar Chavez K-8. This role is crucial in leading change and inspiring students through a commitment to racial equity and social justice. As an immersion teacher, candidates must possess native or near-native fluency in Spanish and demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with students, families, and colleagues to support student success. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the unique characteristics of elementary-level learners and the principles of second language acquisition. In this position, teachers will be responsible for developing lesson plans and delivering core content instruction in both English and Spanish. Strong classroom management skills are essential, as is the ability to foster parent and community involvement. Teachers will be expected to create a safe and welcoming classroom environment that reflects the diversity of the student population. They will also implement instructional practices that engage students in critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving, while maintaining high expectations for all learners. Teachers will monitor student progress, adapt instructional methods to meet individual needs, and maintain accurate records of student development. They will also participate in professional growth activities and contribute to school-wide goals through self-reflection and collaboration with peers. The position requires a commitment to the district's Educational Racial Equity Policy and the ability to advocate for and model inclusive practices in the classroom. Candidates must hold a valid teaching license from the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission and will undergo a language fluency assessment. Preferred qualifications include an ESL endorsement and a Master's degree, along with significant experience teaching in an immersion setting.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans and instruction, providing materials which facilitate active learning.
  • Monitor student progress and adapt course content delivery methods to meet the needs of individual students.
  • Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials, technologies, and equipment to support instruction.
  • Promote a culture of high expectations, providing every student with high quality and culturally relevant instruction.
  • Support and implement the District's Educational Racial Equity Policy.
  • Create a safe, welcoming classroom environment that reflects and supports the racial and ethnic diversity of the student population and community.
  • Understand how learners grow and develop, recognizing variations within and across cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional and physical areas.
  • Implement and ensure a developmentally appropriate, challenging and high-standards learning environment.
  • Develop and implement instructional practices and strategies that include multiple methods of assessment.
  • Support students in meeting rigorous learning goals and engage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas.
  • Develop and implement effective classroom management strategies, providing a safe, secure and respectful learning environment.
  • Communicate student behavior expectations in a positive manner and convey reminders, rules and expectations with consistency and equity.
  • Establish standards, growth and learning goals for each student; develop SMART goals including use of baseline and progression data.
  • Update and maintain accurate and complete records of student progress and development as required by school, district, state and federal policies.

Requirements

  • Native or near-native fluency in Spanish.
  • Writing proficiency in the immersion language.
  • Properly licensed by the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission for assignment as a Professional Educator - Teacher.
  • Experience working with students in a classroom setting.
  • Strong classroom management skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
