About the position

The MSSQL Database Administrator plays a crucial role within a collaborative team environment, focusing on the maintenance, optimization, and technical support of enterprise and business-level databases. This position is responsible for overseeing multiple servers and versions of database software, acting as the Primary Administrator for various database systems that support enterprise applications and custom data warehouses. The primary database systems utilized in this role include Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, and PostgreSQL. The incumbent will also serve as a backup or secondary administrator for other database systems, performing specific duties as required. In this role, the Database Administrator will be tasked with ensuring the reliability and performance of database systems, which involves installation, configuration, patch management, and troubleshooting. The position requires a strong understanding of relational database concepts and the ability to write and execute SQL queries using common reporting tools such as SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) and SQL Developer. The incumbent will also need to have knowledge of IT infrastructure hardware as it relates to database architecture, including servers, storage, networking, and backups. This position offers flexibility, with the potential for 100% remote work or a hybrid arrangement, contingent upon employee performance and business needs. Illinois residency is required for this role. The MSSQL Database Administrator will also be expected to engage in continuous learning and adaptation to new technologies and changing business requirements, ensuring that the database systems remain efficient and effective in supporting the university's operations.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and optimize enterprise and business-level databases.
  • Act as the Primary Administrator for multiple servers and versions of database software.
  • Provide technical expertise for database systems including Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, and PostgreSQL.
  • Serve as a backup or secondary administrator for other database systems as needed.
  • Perform installation, configuration, and patch management for database systems.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve database-related issues.
  • Write and execute SQL queries using common reporting tools.
  • Ensure the reliability and performance of database systems.
  • Collaborate with team members to improve database management processes.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of college coursework in Information Technology (IT) or related discipline, or equivalent work experience.
  • At least three years of experience in Windows System Administration or MS SQL Database Administration.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL DB administration and performing system administration duties for assigned databases.
  • Understanding of relational database concepts and ability to use SQL and reporting tools.
  • Knowledge of IT infrastructure hardware related to database architecture.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience supporting software applications that leverage databases, especially in higher education systems.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL 13 and higher and MySQL 8.0 or higher.
  • Familiarity with Windows operating system script languages such as PowerShell.
  • Experience in Linux system administration and firewall configuration.
  • Knowledge of clustering, load balancing, mirroring, log shipping, and replication technologies.
