The Multimedia Journalist Reporter plays a crucial role in the news production process by producing, reporting, shooting, writing, voicing, editing, and feeding news content across various platforms. This position requires a clear, engaging, and meaningful approach to news reporting that resonates with news consumers. The reporter is responsible for covering news stories for broadcast, providing detailed descriptions of events, and ensuring that the information presented is accurate and compelling. In this role, the reporter arranges interviews with individuals who can provide valuable insights into the stories being covered. They meticulously review their own copy, correcting any errors in content, grammar, and punctuation, while adhering to prescribed editorial styles and formatting guidelines. The reporter evaluates notes taken during events to isolate pertinent facts and details, determining the emphasis, length, and format of each story to organize material effectively. Research is a key component of this position, as the reporter analyzes background information related to news stories to ensure completeness and accuracy. They gather information through various means, including research, interviews, and attendance at events such as political gatherings, news conferences, sports events, and social functions. The reporter pitches relevant stories to news managers and producers, receives assignments, and evaluates leads and tips to develop story ideas. Collaboration with producers and news managers is essential to establish priorities and positions on various issues. Additionally, the reporter checks reference materials such as books, news files, and public records to obtain relevant facts, revises work to meet editorial approval, and fits content within time constraints. They are also responsible for shooting and editing news events and reports, producing and presenting content for all platforms, and ensuring that all material meets the company's standards for journalistic integrity and production quality. The reporter writes stories for web and other eMedia platforms and interacts with viewers and users on social media sites. Special projects and other duties may also be assigned as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Reports news stories for broadcast, describing the background and details of events
  • Arranges interviews with people who can provide information about stories
  • Reviews copy and corrects errors in content, grammar and punctuation, following prescribed editorial style and formatting guidelines
  • Reviews and evaluates notes taken about event aspects to isolate pertinent facts and details
  • Determines a story's emphasis, length and format, and organizes material accordingly
  • Researches and analyzes background information related to news stories to provide complete and accurate information
  • Gathers information about events through research, interviews, experience or attendance at various functions
  • Pitches stories to news managers and news producers relevant to the local community
  • Receives assignments and evaluates leads and tips to develop story ideas
  • Discusses issues with producers and/or news managers to establish priorities or positions
  • Checks reference materials such as books, news files or public records to obtain relevant facts
  • Revises work to meet editorial approval or to fit time requirements
  • Shoots and edits news events and news reports
  • Produces and presents reports for all platforms
  • Ensures that all content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality
  • Writes stories for the web and other eMedia platforms
  • Interacts with viewers/users on social media sites
  • Performs special projects and other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience
  • Fluency in English
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written with the ability to ad lib when required
  • Minimum two years' experience in news reporting (Depending on market size)
  • Superior on-air presence
  • Proficiency with computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, fax machines and other office equipment
  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Valid driver's license with a good driving record
  • Flexibility to work any shift
