About the position

WJMN/WBUP/WBKP is seeking a passionate multimedia journalist dedicated to serving the community through accurate, timely, and engaging reporting. This role requires the journalist to actively participate in news gathering every day across various screens and platforms. The successful candidate will maintain a friendly yet authoritative on-air persona, demonstrating urgency, especially during breaking news events. A high level of engagement on all social media platforms is essential to connect with the audience effectively. The multimedia journalist will be responsible for shooting, writing, editing, and showcasing stories in a compelling manner. This includes overseeing the look and feel of their stories and identifying opportunities to expand on them. The journalist must be ready to immerse themselves in the vibrant communities of the Upper Peninsula, as the station prides itself on being a public service that provides fair and accurate representation of all people. In addition to presenting news stories and other content clearly and concisely for all platforms, the journalist will work closely with management to develop and enterprise stories daily. Evaluating news leads and tips to generate story ideas is a critical part of the role, as is building a network of sources to keep the station ahead of its competitors. The journalist will also demonstrate compelling storytelling through dynamic live shots, stand-ups, creative graphics, and effective use of digital and social media platforms. Participation in promotional activities, public appearances, and community volunteer opportunities is also expected, along with performing special projects and other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Present news stories and other content for all platforms clearly and concisely.
  • Shoot, write, edit, and craft stories to fulfill the brand promise to 'Your Stories. Our Community.'
  • Work with management to enterprise and develop stories daily.
  • Evaluate news leads and tips to develop story ideas.
  • Build a network of sources who supply information that allows the station to stay ahead of its competitors.
  • Demonstrate compelling storytelling using dynamic live shots, stand-ups, creative graphics, and digital and social media platforms.
  • Assist in writing, copy editing, researching, and coordinating news programming and other content.
  • Participate in promotional activities, including public appearances and community volunteer opportunities.
  • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience.
