About the position

KMGH, the E.W. Scripps Company ABC affiliate in Denver, is seeking a talented and creative Multimedia Journalist who is passionate about covering the diverse stories that Colorado has to offer. This role is ideal for a versatile journalist who excels in solo storytelling while also being a team player. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in weather forecasting and a keen focus on environmental topics such as climate change, drought, water supply and demand, and renewable energy initiatives. The position requires a proactive approach to news gathering and storytelling, ensuring that the journalist can effectively engage with the audience across multiple platforms. As a Multimedia Journalist, you will be responsible for receiving assignments or evaluating news leads and tips to develop compelling story ideas. You will gather and verify factual information through interviews, observations, and research, ensuring that all content is accurate and engaging. The role involves organizing material, determining the slant or emphasis of stories, and writing them according to prescribed editorial style and format standards. You will also be responsible for shooting video and still photos to illustrate your stories, as well as editing videos for various multimedia platforms. In addition to reporting and writing, you will appear on television in packaged reports and go live from the site of events or from a mobile broadcast unit. Collaboration is key, as you will work cooperatively with photographers assigned to your stories and assist news producers in preparing newscasts. You will also support online staff in preparing multimedia stories, ensuring that all content is delivered on deadline across multiple platforms, including the internet and digital channels.

Responsibilities

  • Receive assignments or evaluate news leads and news tips to develop story ideas.
  • Gather and verify factual information regarding stories through interview, observation, and research.
  • Organize material, determine slant or emphasis, and write stories according to prescribed editorial style and format standards.
  • Shoot video and still photos to illustrate stories.
  • Edit, or assist in editing, videos for all multimedia platforms.
  • Appear on TV in packaged reports.
  • Go live from the site of events or mobile broadcast unit.
  • Work cooperatively with photographers assigned to stories if one is assigned.
  • Assist news producers in preparing newscasts.
  • Assist online staff in preparing for multimedia stories.
  • Report, write, capture quality visual content, edit and produce stories for multiple platforms on deadline.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism or related degree or equivalent years of experience.
  • Generally, 3+ years of experience in related field preferred.
  • Computer literacy required, including newsroom computer systems.
  • Videography and non-linear editing experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of broadcast quality camera equipment.
  • Edit video on Final Cut Pro editing systems, or similar equipment.
  • Strong broadcast and AP-style writing skills.
  • Proficient at posting content to various websites.
  • Self-motivated and able to work in a fast-paced deadline-driven environment.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record required.
