About the position

KPAX, the E.W. Scripps CBS station in Missoula, Montana, is seeking a Multimedia Journalist who will be responsible for researching, writing, capturing visual content, and editing stories for various platforms. The role involves receiving assignments or evaluating news leads and tips to develop compelling story ideas. The Multimedia Journalist will gather and verify factual information through interviews, observations, and research, ensuring that all content is accurate and engaging. In this position, the journalist will organize material, determine the slant or emphasis of the story, and write it according to prescribed editorial style and format standards. The role also includes shooting video and still photos to illustrate stories, editing videos for all multimedia platforms, and appearing on television programs for taped interviews or narration. The journalist will be expected to give live reports from the site of events or from a mobile broadcast unit, working cooperatively with any assigned photographers. Additionally, the Multimedia Journalist will assist news producers in preparing newscasts and collaborate with online staff to prepare multimedia stories. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and will be self-motivated, demonstrating strong computer literacy and proficiency in newsroom computer systems. Experience with videography and non-linear editing, particularly using Final Cut Pro or similar equipment, is preferred. The role requires strong writing skills in broadcast and AP style, as well as the ability to post content to various websites. Candidates must also be able to lift up to 50 pounds and possess a valid driver's license with a good driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Receive assignment or evaluate news leads and news tips to develop story ideas.
  • Gather and verify factual information regarding stories through interview, observation, and research.
  • Organize material, determine slant or emphasis, and write story according to prescribed editorial style and format standards.
  • Shoot video and still photos to illustrate stories.
  • Edit, or assist in editing, videos for all multimedia platforms.
  • Appear on television program when conducting taped interview or narration.

  • Work cooperatively with photographer assigned to story, if one is assigned.
  • Assist news producer in preparing newscast.
  • Assist online staff in preparing for multimedia stories.

Requirements

  • BS/BA in related discipline or equivalent years of experience preferred.
  • Generally, 3+ years of experience in related field preferred.
  • Computer literacy required, including newsroom computer systems.
  • Videography and non-linear editing experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of broadcast quality camera equipment.
  • Edit video on Final Cut Pro editing systems, or similar equipment.
  • Strong broadcast and AP style writing skills.
  • Proficient at posting content to various websites.
  • Self-motivated and able to work in a fast-paced deadline-driven environment.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Valid driver's license, good driving record, and ability to provide proof of insurance with the company required insurance limits.
