About the position

KSTU, the E.W. Scripps Company FOX affiliate in Salt Lake City, Utah, is seeking a Multimedia Journalist who can set the station apart from its competition through exceptional source-building, storytelling, and journalistic skills. This position is not entry-level; we are looking for a seasoned journalist who can uncover unique stories that resonate with our audience. The ideal candidate will be adept at receiving assignments, evaluating news leads, and developing compelling story ideas that engage viewers and provide them with valuable information. In this role, you will gather and verify factual information through interviews, observations, and thorough research. You will be responsible for organizing material, determining the slant or emphasis of your stories, and writing them according to our editorial style and format standards. Additionally, you will shoot video and still photos to illustrate your stories, edit videos for various multimedia platforms, and appear on television in packaged reports. You will also have the opportunity to go live from the site of events or from a mobile broadcast unit, showcasing your ability to deliver news in real-time. Collaboration is key in this position, as you will work closely with photographers assigned to your stories and assist news producers in preparing newscasts. You will also support the online staff in preparing multimedia stories, ensuring that your reporting reaches audiences across multiple platforms on tight deadlines. This role requires a proactive and self-motivated individual who thrives in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

Responsibilities

  • Receive assignments or evaluate news leads and news tips to develop story ideas.
  • Gather and verify factual information regarding stories through interviews, observation, and research.
  • Organize material, determine slant or emphasis, and write stories according to prescribed editorial style and format standards.
  • Shoot video and still photos to illustrate stories.
  • Edit, or assist in editing, videos for all multimedia platforms.
  • Appear on TV in packaged reports.
  • Go live from the site of events or mobile broadcast units.
  • Work cooperatively with photographers assigned to stories.
  • Assist news producers in preparing newscasts.
  • Assist online staff in preparing for multimedia stories.
  • Report, write, capture quality visual content, edit, and produce stories for multiple platforms on deadline.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism or related degree or equivalent years of experience.
  • Generally, 3+ years of experience in a related field preferred.
  • Computer literacy required, including newsroom computer systems.
  • Videography and non-linear editing experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of broadcast quality camera equipment.
  • Strong broadcast and AP-style writing skills.
  • Proficient at posting content to various websites.
  • Self-motivated and able to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Final Cut Pro editing systems or similar equipment.
