About the position

Gray Media is a leading media company that owns and operates high-quality stations in 113 television markets, reaching 36 percent of US television households. KTUU, known as Alaska's News Source, is the state's most-watched news source, producing 32 hours of broadcast news, weather, and sports content each week. The mission of KTUU is to "Tell Alaska's Story," striving to be the preferred source for news, information, and community service. The Multimedia Journalist (MMJ) position at KTUU is designed for individuals with a passion for news and a knack for visually compelling storytelling. This role is unique, as it requires the journalist to immerse themselves in Alaska's vast and diverse communities, pitching, shooting, editing, and presenting stories daily. The MMJ will travel on assignment to cover breaking news events and other significant stories that impact viewers across Alaska. This position demands creativity, adaptability, and a strong commitment to delivering accurate and engaging news content.

Responsibilities

  • Research, gather, write, and report news stories on-air and online in an accurate, appealing, timely, and creative manner using all sources.
  • Report live on the scene, especially during breaking news events.
  • Conduct regular beat checks and interviews in the field and on set.
  • Develop and maintain sources of information and knowledge about assignments.
  • Demonstrate sound news judgment and collaborate with others to present stories effectively.
  • Utilize non-linear editing equipment daily, with Grass Valley Edius experience being a plus.
  • Enterprise hard-news, research-driven packages under tight deadlines.
  • Pitch stories daily and work with the assignment desk and Managing Editor to develop stories.
  • Attend, host, and speak at community service events, schools, and community gatherings; engage with viewers.
  • Post and update stories on the web, often remotely while traveling.
  • Provide news content for social media and interact with viewers.
  • Enter scripts, CG text, and times into newsroom software (ENPS) prior to newscasts.
  • Use appropriate field lighting to enhance news presentation.
  • Participate in critique, feedback, and training as part of the job.
  • Communicate regularly with digital staff and other appropriate personnel during breaking news.
  • Follow clothing and appearance guidelines.
  • Perform creative stand-ups and explanatory live shorts as a visual storyteller.
  • Be available for evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field.
  • On-air experience in the broadcast news industry preferred.
  • Experience with broadcast/digital cameras, newsroom software (ENPS), and non-linear editing (Grass Valley Edius experience is a plus).
  • Ability to write in a clear, concise, conversational manner.
  • Knowledge of AP Stylebook.
  • Excellent interview and conversational writing skills.
  • Strong live reporting skills and on-camera presentation skills required.
  • Basic computer knowledge including newsroom software (such as ENPS), Microsoft applications, and internet use.
