About the position

WTMJ, the NBC affiliate owned by The E.W. Scripps Company in Milwaukee, is seeking a passionate Multimedia Journalist to join our team and serve the vibrant communities of Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. This unique opportunity allows you to live and work along the picturesque shores of Lake Michigan, in a region known for its beautiful biking and walking trails, charming shops, and delightful restaurants. As the first-ever multimedia journalist based in Ozaukee County, you will play a crucial role in covering local news like never before, establishing deep connections with the community and ensuring that their stories are told with authenticity and care. In this role, you will be responsible for receiving assignments or evaluating news leads and tips to develop compelling story ideas. You will gather and verify factual information through interviews, observations, and thorough research. Your ability to organize material and determine the appropriate slant or emphasis will be essential as you write stories according to prescribed editorial style and format standards. Additionally, you will shoot video and still photos to illustrate your stories, edit videos for various multimedia platforms, and appear on-air in both live and pre-recorded situations. Your work will involve giving live reports from the site of events or from a mobile broadcast unit, collaborating with photographers, assisting news producers in preparing newscasts, and supporting online staff in creating multimedia stories. Responsibilities

  • Receive assignment or evaluate news leads and news tips to develop story ideas.
  • Gather and verify factual information regarding stories through interview, observation, and research.
  • Organize material, determine slant or emphasis, and write story according to prescribed editorial style and format standards.
  • Shoot video and still photos to illustrate stories.
  • Edit, or assist in editing, videos for all multimedia platforms.
  • Appear on TV on-air in live or pre-recorded situations.
  • Give live reports from site of event or mobile broadcast unit.
  • Work cooperatively with photographer assigned to story, if one is assigned.
  • Assist news producer in preparing newscast.
  • Assist online staff in preparing for multimedia stories.

Requirements

  • BS/BA in related discipline or equivalent years of experience preferred
  • Generally, 3+ years of experience in related field preferred
  • Computer literacy required, including newsroom computer systems
  • Videography and non-linear editing experience preferred
  • Knowledge of broadcast quality camera equipment
  • Edit video on Final Cut Pro editing systems, or similar equipment
  • Strong broadcast and AP style writing skills
  • Proficient at posting content to various websites
  • Self-motivated and able to work in a fast-paced deadline-driven environment
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Valid driver's license, good driving record, and ability to provide proof of insurance with the company required insurance limits
