About the position

WMAR, the ABC affiliate in Baltimore, MD, owned by The E.W. Scripps Company, is seeking a Sports Reporter / Multimedia Journalist. This position offers a unique opportunity to tell the sports stories of Baltimore, a vibrant city known for its rich history and attractions, including the Baltimore Orioles and Johns Hopkins University. The role involves receiving assignments or evaluating leads and news tips to develop compelling story ideas. The successful candidate will gather and verify factual information through interviews, observations, and research, ensuring that all stories are accurate and engaging. In this role, you will be responsible for organizing material, determining the slant or emphasis of stories, and writing them according to prescribed editorial style and format standards. You will also shoot video and still photos to illustrate your stories, edit videos for various multimedia platforms, and appear on television in both live and pre-recorded situations. The position requires collaboration with photographers and news producers to prepare newscasts and assist online staff in creating multimedia stories. Other duties may be assigned as needed, making this a dynamic and fast-paced role that requires adaptability and creativity.

Responsibilities

  • Receive assignment or evaluate leads and news tips to develop story ideas.
  • Gather and verify factual information regarding stories through interview, observation, and research.
  • Organize material, determine slant or emphasis, and write story according to prescribed editorial style and format standards.
  • Shoot video and still photos to illustrate stories.
  • Edit, or assist in editing, videos for all multimedia platforms.
  • Appear on television in live and pre-recorded situations in the studio or in the field.
  • Give live reports from site of event or mobile broadcast unit.
  • Work cooperatively with photographer assigned to story, if one is assigned.
  • Assist news producer in preparing newscast.
  • Assist online staff in preparing for multimedia stories.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • BS/BA in related discipline or equivalent years of experience preferred.
  • Generally, 3+ years of experience in related field preferred.
  • Computer literacy required, including newsroom computer systems.
  • Videography and non-linear editing experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of broadcast quality camera equipment.
  • Edit video on Final Cut Pro editing systems, or similar equipment.
  • Strong broadcast and AP style writing skills.
  • Proficient at posting content to various websites.
  • Self-motivated and able to work in a fast-paced deadline-driven environment.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Valid driver's license, good driving record, and ability to provide proof of insurance with the company required insurance limits.
