About the position

WTMJ, the NBC affiliate owned by The E.W. Scripps Company in Milwaukee, is seeking a passionate and community-oriented Multimedia Journalist to be the first-ever journalist based in Ozaukee County. This position is a unique opportunity to cover the vibrant communities of Port Washington, Cedarburg, Mequon, and Grafton, all located along the picturesque shores of Lake Michigan. The successful candidate will be deeply connected to the area, as the role requires a commitment to covering Ozaukee County like never before, with a focus on local stories and community engagement. The ideal candidate will not only have a strong understanding of the local culture but also a desire to contribute to the community through impactful journalism. In this role, you will be responsible for receiving assignments or evaluating news leads and tips to develop compelling story ideas. You will gather and verify factual information through interviews, observations, and research, ensuring that your stories are accurate and engaging. The position requires you to organize material, determine the slant or emphasis of your stories, and write them according to prescribed editorial style and format standards. You will also be tasked with shooting video and still photos to illustrate your stories, as well as editing videos for various multimedia platforms. On-air appearances, both live and pre-recorded, will be a key part of your responsibilities, along with giving live reports from the site of events or from a mobile broadcast unit. Collaboration with photographers and assistance in preparing newscasts and multimedia stories will also be essential components of your role.

Responsibilities

  • Receive assignment or evaluate news leads and news tips to develop story ideas.
  • Gather and verify factual information regarding stories through interview, observation, and research.
  • Organize material, determine slant or emphasis, and write story according to prescribed editorial style and format standards.
  • Shoot video and still photos to illustrate stories.
  • Edit, or assist in editing, videos for all multimedia platforms.
  • Appear on TV on-air in live or pre-recorded situations.
  • Give live reports from site of event or mobile broadcast unit.
  • Work cooperatively with photographer assigned to story, if one is assigned.
  • Assist news producer in preparing newscast.
  • Assist online staff in preparing for multimedia stories.

Requirements

  • BS/BA in related discipline or equivalent years of experience preferred.
  • Generally, 3+ years of experience in related field preferred.
  • Computer literacy required, including newsroom computer systems.
  • Videography and non-linear editing experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of broadcast quality camera equipment.
  • Edit video on Final Cut Pro editing systems, or similar equipment.
  • Strong broadcast and AP style writing skills.
  • Proficient at posting content to various websites.
  • Self-motivated and able to work in a fast-paced deadline-driven environment.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Valid driver's license, good driving record, and ability to provide proof of insurance with the company required insurance limits.
