About the position

WXYZ, the E.W. Scripps ABC station in Detroit, Michigan, is seeking a Multimedia Journalist to join our dynamic news team. With a legacy that dates back to 1948, WXYZ has been at the forefront of broadcasting, delivering impactful news coverage to the Detroit community. The ideal candidate will be passionate about storytelling and investigative reporting, demonstrating a strong commitment to journalistic integrity. This role is pivotal in maintaining our tradition of excellence in news reporting and community engagement. As a Multimedia Journalist, you will be responsible for developing sources and breaking relevant stories across all platforms. Your duties will include pitching, shooting, writing, editing, and tracking compelling enterprise and real-time stories. Accuracy is paramount; you will need to confirm the information before publishing, posting, or broadcasting. You will also be expected to produce packaged reports and go live from the scene when necessary, showcasing your ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines. In addition to reporting, you will assist news producers in preparing newscasts by identifying the best video, sound, and showcasing elements. Organizing material, determining emphasis, and writing stories according to prescribed editorial style and format standards will be key components of your role. You will shoot video and still photos to illustrate stories and edit videos for all multimedia platforms. Collaboration with photographers and online staff will be essential to prepare multimedia stories effectively. This position requires a flexible schedule, as fill-in work will be necessary, and the ability to lift up to 75 pounds is required.

Responsibilities

  • Develop sources and break relevant stories on all platforms.
  • Pitch, shoot, write, edit, and track compelling enterprise and real-time stories.
  • Confirm accuracy of information before publishing, posting, or broadcasting stories.
  • Pitch stories that impact local communities and neighborhoods.
  • Produce packaged reports and go live from the scene when necessary.
  • Help news producers prepare newscasts by identifying the best video, sound and showcasing elements.
  • Organize material, determine emphasis, and write stories according to prescribed editorial style and format standards.
  • Shoot video and still photos to illustrate stories.
  • Edit, or assist in editing, videos for all multimedia platforms.
  • Work cooperatively with photographer assigned to story if one is assigned.
  • Assist online staff in preparing multimedia stories.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline or equivalent years of experience preferred.
  • Generally, 3+ years of experience in related field preferred.
  • Strong communication skills, oral and written.
  • Storytelling ability.
  • Videography and non-linear editing experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of broadcast quality camera equipment.
  • Edit video on Final Cut Pro editing systems, or similar equipment.
  • Strong broadcast and AP-style writing skills.
  • Computer literate, including newsroom computer systems.
  • Proficient at posting content to various platforms.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to work in a fast-paced deadline-driven environment.
  • Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record required.
