About the position

The Multimedia Journalist at KY3 and KSPR is responsible for covering local news and weather with a focus on creativity and enterprise hard news stories. This role requires an experienced journalist who can work independently in the field, report live during breaking news, and engage with the community. The position emphasizes the importance of sound news judgment, collaboration, and the ability to produce compelling content under tight deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Research, gather, shoot, write, edit, and report news stories on-air and online.
  • Report live on the scene during breaking news.
  • Aggressively research stories and conduct interviews in the field.
  • Develop and maintain sources of information and knowledge about assignments.
  • Demonstrate sound news judgment and collaborate with others to present stories effectively.
  • Utilize non-linear editing equipment daily.
  • Create enterprise hard-news, research-driven packages under tight deadlines.
  • Participate in story selection meetings and contribute lead story ideas.
  • Attend and speak at community service events and meet viewers.
  • Post and update stories on the web and social media, including Facebook and Twitter.
  • Communicate with web staff during breaking news events.
  • Follow clothing and appearance guidelines.
  • Perform creative stand-ups and explanatory live shots.
  • Make regular beat checks and stay informed about the viewing area.
  • Critique, provide feedback, and participate in training as needed.

Requirements

  • Ability to write in a clear, concise, conversational manner.
  • Excellent interview and conversational writing skills.
  • Strong live reporting skills and on-camera presentation skills.
  • Basic computer knowledge, including newsroom software and Microsoft applications.
  • Ability to carry, shoot, and edit video with digital cameras.
  • Experience producing and posting content to websites.
  • Intermediate knowledge of social media.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Strong teamwork skills and ability to meet tight deadlines under pressure.
  • Strong initiative and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrate solid news judgment and journalistic ethics.
  • Maintain professional conduct in the station and community.
  • Strong research skills and ability to navigate online search engines.
  • Stay current with national and local news/weather.
