About the position

WDBJ7, a leading CBS affiliated media powerhouse in Roanoke, Virginia, is seeking a Multimedia Journalist (MMJ) to join their team. The ideal candidate will have a passion for journalism, creativity, and a strong work ethic, capable of writing, shooting, editing, and presenting compelling stories live. This role requires the ability to generate innovative story ideas and work collaboratively with co-workers to deliver high-quality news coverage.

Responsibilities

  • Arrive to the editorial meeting on time with at least two story ideas for the day's newscasts.
  • Assist with the overall content of news stories within newscasts.
  • Bring innovative story ideas to editorial meetings and contribute to the station's goals.
  • Field report stories as directed and work flexible hours.
  • Develop, investigate, write, report, and edit stories of interest.
  • Write and post web stories while traveling back to the station.
  • Edit packages using the Edius system.
  • Follow clothing and appearance guidelines.
  • Generate investigative stories using sources.
  • Work with producers to ensure story accuracy and presentation.
  • Perform creative and explanatory live shots and stand-ups.
  • Write and post website stories prior to airing on television.
  • Work mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Research, gather, write, and report news stories on-air and online.
  • Report live on the scene during breaking news.
  • Conduct interviews in the field and on-set.
  • Develop and maintain sources of information about assignments.
  • Demonstrate sound news judgment and collaborate with others.
  • Enterprise hard-news, research-driven packages under tight deadlines.
  • Participate in story selection process and contribute story ideas.
  • Attend community service events and meet viewers.
  • Post and update stories on the web, often remotely.
  • Update social media sites daily to report stories and interact with viewers.
  • Enter CG text and times into newsroom software before newscasts.
  • Use knowledge of appropriate lighting to enhance news presentation.
  • Present TV stories in alternative ways at least twice a week.
  • Produce daily one reporter package and one vo/sot/vo or other contribution on a different story.
  • Critique, provide feedback, and participate in training.
  • Communicate with web staff during breaking news.

Requirements

  • At least two years of television reporting experience preferred.
  • Experience with ENPS newsroom software and/or Grass Valley non-linear editing is a plus.
  • Experience with web writing and social media posts is required.
  • Excellent broadcasting writing experience is a must.
  • Experience with digital cameras is necessary.
  • Strong understanding of daily newscast content and collaboration with producers.
  • Excellent interview and conversational writing skills.
  • Strong live reporting skills and on-camera presentation skills required.
  • Basic computer knowledge including newsroom software and Microsoft applications.
  • Ability to shoot and edit video with digital cameras.
  • Able to produce and post content to websites.
  • Intermediate knowledge of social media.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Strong initiative and attention to detail is required.
  • Demonstrate solid news judgment and journalistic ethics.
  • Bachelor's Degree in journalism or related field required.
  • Must hold a valid driver's license and be insurable.

  • Experience with editorial leadership skills.
  • Familiarity with many platforms including web, mobile, and social networks.
