About the position

This position at WNYT involves selecting stories for writing, shooting, editing, and researching newscast content. The role is crucial in presenting live news reports, both scripted and unscripted, on television. The successful candidate will maintain extensive community contacts and stay aware of local, state, and national current events. Collaboration with the News Director and other news managers is essential to choose, write, and edit stories that resonate with the audience's preferences. Daily responsibilities include meeting with the News Director, reporters, and other news anchors to be briefed on the day's news, revising scripts, and preparing to deliver them on-air. The candidate will need to organize news segments to present the most interesting pieces first and ensure that late-breaking news is included in the newscasts. Additionally, the role involves introducing news correspondents reporting on scene, asking relevant questions, and interviewing guests involved in particular stories. The position also requires keeping abreast of news developments by studying papers, attending events, and maintaining contact with industry professionals. Writing for the station's website and maintaining an active social media presence are also part of the job. The candidate will make daily promotional community appearances, provide leadership in the newsroom, and contribute to the overall team effort while complying with the moral code of the journalistic profession. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelors in Communication, Speech or related field with at least 1 year of experience as a Multimedia Journalist; or a combination of education and experience to meet the requirements of the position.
  • Quick and effective decision making, live ad-libbing and maintaining performance under extreme pressure.
  • Highly developed public speaking and interpersonal skills along with exceptional communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Professional, consistent on-air appearance and ability to read Teleprompter.
  • Advanced abilities in critical thinking.
  • Broad knowledge of local, national and international affairs (e.g. political, economic, legislative and cultural).
  • Comfortable yet professional presence on camera with the ability to improvise in a live on-camera setting.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Available to work on a flexible schedule.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions and strict deadlines.
  • Maintain appropriate and strict standards regarding wardrobe, hair, cosmetics and grooming.
