About the position

As a member of the ABC6 News (KAAL-TV) team, you will play a crucial role in delivering news stories that inform and engage our audience. This position is responsible for covering news stories for the television station, which includes a variety of tasks such as enterprising, reporting, shooting, editing, and writing news stories. You will have the opportunity to originate and develop stories for both broadcast and digital platforms, ensuring that the content is clear, accurate, and compelling. Your work will involve breaking down complex stories into understandable segments, ensuring that visuals are relevant and impactful, and presenting live reports from various locations, including the scene of the news, the newsroom, or the studio. In this role, you will be expected to travel to news scenes to gather video and information, write and post stories to our website and other digital media platforms, and frequently update online content. You will shoot steady, sequenced video with good audio quality for daily newscasts, specials, and social media, all while adhering to tight deadlines. Editing video for news stories will also be a key responsibility, utilizing various techniques and editing machines, whether at the station or remotely. You will maintain extensive community contacts and stay aware of local and national current events, contributing to the overall team effort to provide the best possible local television journalism. Collaboration is essential in this position, as you will communicate frequently with colleagues in the newsroom and work cooperatively with a variety of people. You will also be expected to maintain professional standards regarding appearance and grooming, attend editorial meetings, and contribute story ideas regularly. Punctuality and adherence to the established schedule are crucial, with the flexibility to work alternate hours as needed. Responsibilities

Requirements

  • A college degree in journalism, television, or communications or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrable skills in shooting and editing video for television news.
  • Valid driver's license and a safe driving history.
  • Knowledgeable of issues, newsmakers, and current events.
  • Ability to handle a variety of news reporting assignments.
  • Familiar with contemporary news technologies for video acquisition and transmission.
  • Solid writing skills and knowledge of production values preferred.
  • Ability to communicate with a variety of people in extreme circumstances.
  • Ability to think quickly and respond to breaking news in high-pressure situations.
  • Flexibility to work any assigned shift including nights, weekends, and holidays.
