About the position

The Museum Attendant at Harvard Art Museums serves as a front-line provider of customer service and museum information, ensuring the safety and security of visitors, staff, and the museum's collections. This role involves monitoring museum spaces, enforcing rules, and providing assistance to the public while maintaining a professional demeanor.

Responsibilities

  • Provide protection for visitors, staff, and collections under the direction of the Security Manager.
  • Patrol galleries and respond to object alarms.
  • Maintain surveillance of the visiting public to prevent damage to the collection.
  • Answer visitor questions and provide directions, referring to Visitor Services when necessary.
  • Stay informed about museum programming and events to assist visitors effectively.
  • Minimize or contain conflicts and engage the Security Manager when needed.
  • Enforce policies related to visitor conduct as directed.
  • Control and monitor access and egress points of the building.
  • Escort individuals into restricted areas as directed.
  • Assist in the evacuation of the public and staff during emergencies.
  • Complete incident reports and submit them to the Security Manager.
  • Perform daily inspections of galleries and report on safety and security issues.
  • Coordinate service efforts with other museum staff using radio communication.
  • Present a clean and professional image in accordance with uniform standards.
  • Engage with visitors and staff in a courteous manner.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A minimum of three years of customer service experience is required.
  • Good written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Ability to learn and follow procedures and adapt to new procedures.
  • Attention to detail is essential.
  • Prior security experience is desirable.
  • Training in CPR and/or first aid is desirable.
