About the position

The Museum Curator position at the Golden Gate National Recreation Area involves evaluating and managing museum collections to ensure their relevance and alignment with the park's mission. The role includes developing recommendations for the culling and deaccessioning of items, collaborating with various agencies for the transfer of collections, and supporting the museum program's efforts to protect and preserve significant resources for public sharing.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate existing museum collections for redundancy and relevancy.
  • Develop and write recommendations and guidance for culling, removal, and deaccessioning of museum items.
  • Work with repositories and agencies for identification and transfer of deaccessioned collections.
  • Support the museum program's efforts to assess and refine the collection to meet the Scope of Collections and Records Management guidelines.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in museum work or a similar area of cultural resources management, or equivalent experience.
  • At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service, including handling objects and historic materials in museum collections and evaluating museum records.
  • Ability to provide transcripts to verify educational qualifications.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in research related to provenance and chain of custody of museum collections.
  • Familiarity with museum management and cultural resources management.
