About the position

The Children's Museum Houston is seeking part-time Discovery Guides to facilitate family learning engagement in the Museum's exhibits and related programs. This role involves ensuring visitor safety, providing first aid when necessary, and enhancing the overall visitor experience through educational engagement. Discovery Guides will work with children and families, leading educational activities and ensuring the Museum's policies are upheld.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate visitors' learning by describing, modeling, and prompting engagement with the Museum's exhibits.
• Serve as the teaching guide for visiting classrooms, leading students through the curriculum focus set for each exhibit for each age/grade.
• Serve as first responder in emergencies, following the Museum's protocol for lost children and performing minor first aid as needed.
• Enforce Museum rules and exercise judgment to call in management assistance when necessary.
• Provide excellent customer service and diffuse issues with disgruntled visitors.
• Re-stock supplies and reboot exhibits that are not functioning properly throughout the day.
• Prepare exhibits for opening and reset them in the evenings for the next day.
• Demonstrate flexibility by working special events and rentals outside of normal work hours.
• Wear costumes, uniforms, and other special attire when necessary.

Requirements

• Knowledge of child development appropriate for various ages.
• Knowledge of the Museum's exhibits and activities.
• Strong communication skills for interacting with both adults and children.
• Classroom management skills to monitor large groups and maintain order.
• Dedication, responsibility, and strong initiative.
• Outgoing, positive, and energetic attitude.
• Flexible schedule and reliability.
• Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
