About the position

The University of South Florida is seeking a creative and collaborative individual for the role of Instructor of Music Education and Assistant Director of Bands. This full-time, 9-month Assistant Professor of Instruction position focuses on teaching, administrative duties, and contributing to the USF Band Program. The anticipated start date is August 2025 or earlier, depending on the successful candidate's availability and the school's needs.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses in music education and conducting.
  • Assist with administrative, teaching, and creative aspects of the USF Band Program.
  • Direct the Concert Band.
  • Supervise student teacher field experience.
  • Run the annual middle school band festival, 'Symphonic Celebrations'.
  • Maintain an active student recruiting schedule.
  • Serve on committees and perform other appropriate university and professional service.

Requirements

  • Doctorate (PhD, DMA, etc.) in music.
  • Four years of band directing experience at the secondary school level, including marching and concert ensembles.

Nice-to-haves

  • Demonstrated involvement with contemporary trends in concert bands and music education.
  • Evidence of administrative and program development skills.
  • Record of excellent teaching at the university level.
  • Demonstrated examples of collaboration with colleagues.
  • Documented evidence of artistic conducting.
  • Digital recording, mixing, and producing proficiencies.
  • Diverse musical backgrounds and musical interests.
