About the position

The Mannes School of Music at the College of Performing Arts is seeking highly motivated students to serve as Research Assistants in the area of Music Transcription and Analysis. This position is ideal for students who are interested in pursuing a career in the music industry or in music studies. The role involves supporting various initiatives within the Area of Research, under the supervision of Ho Chak Law, Assistant Professor of Race and Musicology. The Research Assistant will be responsible for meticulous tasks that require a high level of attention to detail and responsibility. This position is part of a collective bargaining agreement with SENS-UAW, Local 7902, and is open to student applicants with or without Federal Work Study awards. The work mode for this position is on-campus, and the hourly rate is set at $30.16, with an expected workload of approximately 5 hours per week.

Responsibilities

  • Transcribing audio recordings of songs for comparative analysis
  • Verifying and organizing data associated with particular musicians, musical events, or audio recordings
  • Updating a bibliographic database
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned to support ongoing research projects and substantive academic tasks associated with course work and/or faculty research.

Requirements

  • Experience transcribing or analyzing music (of whatever genres or traditions)

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiar with Sibelius or Finale
  • Having taken one or more courses on topics related to music transcription or music analysis
  • Proficient in one or more of the following languages: Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, Hokkien, Cantonese, Mandarin
  • Current student in a Mannes School of Music (BM, MM, PDPL) or School of Jazz & Contemporary Music (BFA) degree program
