About the position

SAIC is seeking a Computer Systems Engineer to support the Ocean Biology Processing Group at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. This role involves maintaining and upgrading computing systems that support satellite-based remote sensing of the ocean, ensuring reliable operations of computer and network servers, and complying with NASA IT security policies.

Responsibilities

• Configure and maintain the reliable operation of computer and network servers
• Install and upgrade computer components and software
• Manage virtual servers and integrate automation processes
• Perform preventive maintenance on operating systems and repair system/environment problems
• Monitor and troubleshoot hardware and software errors
• Maintain and update OS and application software and firmware in both server and end-user environments
• Evaluate, test, and recommend procedural, hardware, and software solutions to address project needs
• Comply with NASA IT security, configuration, and patching policies
• Monitor cloud security scans for vulnerabilities.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree and five (5) years or more experience; Master's degree and three (3) years or more experience; PhD and 0 years related experience
• Minimum of 5 years of Linux/Unix systems engineering/administration experience
• Support of Linux server and workstation configurations (Red Hat and Ubuntu preferred)
• Good interpersonal skills for end-user support
• Ability to work independently to resolve system issues
• Good documentation skills
• Must pass a NASA background check for System Administrators.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience working in the NASA computing environment
• Experience with the Amazon Web Services computing environment
• Experience with Bigfix, SentinelOne, Splunk, Qualys, or Snyk applications
• Linux cloud computing/container software and administration (Docker / Kubernetes)
• Automation of administration and compliance with tools such as Ansible.
