About the position

The Native Success Program Coordinator/Student Academic Success Counselor (Coordinator) will play a pivotal role in enhancing programming aimed at promoting the success of Native American students at California State University, Sacramento. Under the supervision of the Senior Lead of Native Student Success, the Coordinator will be responsible for developing the Esak'tima' Center, which serves as a hub for advising and counseling services tailored to the Native student population. This position will involve collaboration with various campus departments and local tribes to implement initiatives that align with the Graduation Initiative and the university's goals for improving graduation rates among underrepresented students. The Coordinator will work within the Unit of Student Academic Success and Educational Equity Programs (SASEEP), which is dedicated to fostering an environment that supports the retention and graduation of students, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds. The Native Scholars Transition Program, a key component of this effort, provides cultural programming, peer advising, and summer programming designed to create a supportive pathway for Native American students. The Coordinator will be instrumental in ensuring that these programs meet the unique needs of the Native student community, thereby contributing to their academic success and overall well-being. In addition to program development, the Coordinator will be responsible for advising students individually and in groups, addressing complex student-related matters, and maintaining cooperative relationships with various stakeholders. The role requires a commitment to creating an inclusive environment that recognizes and celebrates the values and contributions of Native students, making the Esak'tima Center a welcoming space for all students.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and coordinate programming to support Native American student success.
  • Assist in the establishment and operation of the Esak'tima' Center.
  • Provide advising and counseling services to Native students.
  • Collaborate with campus departments and local tribes on initiatives to enhance student success.
  • Implement the Native Scholars Transition Program, including cultural programming and peer advising.
  • Analyze student needs and develop strategies to address them effectively.
  • Prepare reports and documentation related to program activities and student outcomes.
  • Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment for Native students.

Requirements

  • Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience.
  • A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a related field may substitute for one year of experience.
  • Knowledge of individual and group behavior principles.
  • Ability to analyze complex situations and adopt effective courses of action.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively in a diverse environment.
  • Proficiency in standard office software packages, such as Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Familiarity with school-based record/data systems, such as PeopleSoft.
  • Commitment to maintaining an inclusive work environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with students from various ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of the Native American student population and communities.
  • Experience in advising and supporting students in co-curricular and cultural activities.
  • Knowledge of student service programs in the California State University System.
