About the position

The Natural Resource Enforcement Officer is responsible for patrolling assigned areas and responding to calls related to violations of natural resource laws. This role involves conducting investigations, enforcing regulations, and collaborating with various law enforcement agencies. The officer will also provide educational services to the community regarding natural resource protection and participate in strategic planning within the department.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol assigned areas and respond to calls for service involving violations related to Natural Resource Enforcement.
  • Initiate appropriate enforcement concerning violations of Navajo Nation State and/or Federal laws, regulations, policies, and procedures regarding Natural Resources.
  • Conduct field investigations and carry firearms as required.
  • Take testimony, determine the validity of alleged offenses, take witness statements, and collect evidence for investigations.
  • Collaborate with the Prosecutor regarding the filing of cases with the Judicial System and testify in criminal and civil courts as required.
  • Provide assistance and services to community members and visitors, including educational information on natural and environmental resource protection.
  • Conduct regulatory permit checks related to Natural Resources, such as water usage and mineral exploration.
  • Assist other law enforcement agencies and Navajo Nation departments as requested, including emergency/non-emergency operations and predator control.
  • Maintain a daily log of activities and prepare written reports.
  • Attend meetings and trainings, maintaining contact with various Federal, State, County, and Tribal law enforcement agencies.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED and three (3) years of law enforcement officer experience or closely related work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Completion of an approved Basic Law Enforcement Training Program.
  • Possession of Navajo Nation POST, New Mexico, Utah, or Arizona State Certification and/or Navajo Ranger Commission.
  • Valid state driver's license and favorable background investigation.
  • Ability to undergo an annual physical examination and pass bi-annual firearms recertification.
  • Must be 21 years of age and possess certifications in ICS courses: 100, 200, 700, and 800.
