About The Position

The Natural Resources Protection Inspector position within the Development Services Department focuses on the protection of natural resources through inspections, code enforcement, and community engagement. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in environmental science, customer service, and arboriculture, with the ability to make critical decisions in a fast-paced environment. This role involves working closely with various stakeholders, including citizens, HOA's, and other departments, to ensure compliance with environmental codes and promote tree conservation efforts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Natural Science, or Landscape Architecture.
  • Possession of a current Florida Driver's License.
  • Knowledge of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Listed Species Guidelines.
  • Knowledge of Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Listed Species Guidelines.
  • Knowledge of tree entomology and pathology principles.
  • Knowledge of Urban Forestry and Arboriculture principles.
  • Ability to evaluate project designs for the preservation of natural resources.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Arborist or on the path to becoming one.
  • Experience in code enforcement or knowledge of construction plans.
  • Experience in stormwater/hydrology.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections for single-family residential land alterations and landscaping permits, focusing on tree impacts and compliance with site plans.
  • Perform commercial landscaping inspections to ensure compliance with approved landscaping requirements and ANSI 300 A standards for tree care.
  • Receive and review tree removal applications, conducting assessments to determine tree condition and authorization for removal.
  • Assist HOA's and CDDs with neighborhood tree conservation programs and provide information on the County's Tree Program.
  • Investigate citizen complaints regarding upland environmental code violations, including unpermitted tree work and land alterations.
  • Prepare investigation reports, issue notices of violation, and work with violators to achieve compliance.
  • Monitor ongoing cases and provide testimony at special magistrate hearings as necessary.
