About The Position

The Natural Resources Specialist (Plant Propagation) is responsible for managing Dakota County's plant propagation program and overseeing the daily operations of the County's plant growth facilities. This role involves project management, including planning, executing, and finalizing projects related to natural resource restoration and stewardship. The Specialist will coordinate with various stakeholders, manage staff and volunteers, and ensure quality control throughout project lifecycles.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in forestry, natural resource management, or a closely related field.
  • One year of direct hands-on natural resource restoration and/or management work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience totaling five years.
  • Valid driver's license.

  • Knowledge of grant writing and reporting.
  • Experience in plant identification and wildlife/insect identification.
  • Knowledge of vegetation and wildlife/insect survey design.
  • Experience with prescribed burning (S-130/190).

Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of Dakota County's plant propagation program.
  • Oversee daily operations of the County's plant growth facilities, including a greenhouse and seed augmentation beds.
  • Plan, execute, and finalize projects according to deadlines and within budget.
  • Acquire resources and coordinate efforts of team members, stakeholders, and contractors.
  • Define project objectives and oversee quality control throughout project lifecycles.
  • Perform project management tasks including strategic planning, budget development, and communication with stakeholders.
  • Lead natural resources initiatives such as plant propagation and vegetation monitoring.
  • Conduct site analyses and manage project planning including plant identification and issue resolution.
  • Develop Natural Resource Management Plans for parks and greenways.
  • Cultivate strategic partnerships to advance the natural resources program.
  • Oversee the safe operation of power equipment and vehicles common to natural resource management.
  • Obtain necessary permits, licenses, or certifications as required.
  • Direct and perform natural resource restoration and maintenance duties.
  • Utilize GIS applications to plan and monitor natural resources projects.
