About the position

The Natural Resources Volunteer Program Manager is responsible for leading and managing volunteer projects and programs within the Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District. This role focuses on organizing volunteer efforts for restoration and stewardship in parks, trails, and open spaces, while collaborating with community partners to provide conservation education. The manager oversees contractors and youth staff, ensuring successful project implementation and community engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage volunteer projects in parks, trails, and open spaces.
  • Organize volunteer project planning and implementation for community members.
  • Develop and maintain a volunteer schedule including monthly work parties and annual events.
  • Coordinate staff resources, equipment, and materials for project success.
  • Provide onsite leadership for volunteers at project sites.
  • Recruit, train, and monitor volunteers effectively.
  • Act as the onsite lead for contractors on restoration and trails projects.
  • Coordinate stewardship projects with schools and afterschool programs.
  • Conduct community outreach activities and represent the District at events.
  • Oversee the Student Conservation Corps, including hiring and supervising staff.
  • Maintain volunteer programming records and present them annually to leadership.
  • Assist in budget preparation and monitoring for the division.
  • Attend continuing education meetings and workshops.
  • Ensure safety programs are followed by assigned staff.

Requirements

  • A minimum of five years' experience leading volunteers and working with youth in outdoor settings.
  • At least two years' experience in ecological restoration.
  • Bachelor's degree in horticulture, biology, environmental education, parks management, or a related field preferred.
  • Valid WA State driver's license or equivalent required.
  • First Aid and CPR certification required within one year of hire.
  • Wilderness First Responder certification preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in community outreach and education programs.
  • Knowledge of parks services maintenance and development.
  • Basic competence in computers and data management software.
