About the position

The NAVAIR Additive Manufacturing Technician position at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) is designed for a motivated individual to support an accelerated, short-term training program focused on additive manufacturing. This role involves assisting with instruction, ordering materials necessary for the program's operation, and providing overall support to the class. The technician will be responsible for delivering instruction on various topics related to additive manufacturing processes, safety best practices, and hands-on training. The position requires flexibility, as it may involve evening and weekend classes, as well as potential travel to off-campus centers for instruction. The IALR is committed to driving economic transformation through applied research and advanced learning, and this role is critical in achieving that mission. The technician will work closely with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students, fostering an inclusive learning environment. The position is based in Danville, VA, and is part of a growing team that is expanding due to the success of the Manufacturing Advancement team and the Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM) Program, which is funded by a federal contract through June 2025, with potential for continued funding beyond that date.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with instruction in additive manufacturing processes and safety best practices.
  • Order materials necessary for the operation of the training program.
  • Provide overall support to the class and assist in hands-on training.
  • Deliver evening and weekend classes as required.
  • Travel to off-campus centers for classroom instruction when necessary.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience in CAD/CAM software, preferably SolidWorks.
  • Extensive experience in slicing software, such as Cura or Insite.
  • Experience in additive manufacturing processes, particularly in metals and/or plastics.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

Nice-to-haves

  • Navy/USMC military experience preferred.
  • Associate degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience in curriculum and course design and development.
  • Creative thinking and problem-solving attitude.
  • Current technology skills related to teaching in the discipline and a willingness to pursue future technological developments.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching or instruction of adult learners.
  • Knowledge of mechanical engineering standards and material specifications.
  • Experience in the development of G-Code and utilization of post-processing methodologies.
  • Competency in blueprint interpretation and GD&T.
