About the position

The NBS Specimen Logistics Tech II plays a crucial role in the Newborn Screening (NBS) Program, performing complex public health work under the supervision of the Newborn Screening Specimen Logistics Group Manager. This position is responsible for ensuring the quality of laboratory specimens submitted by healthcare providers, providing training on specimen requirements, and maintaining laboratory quality assurance documentation. The role requires independent decision-making regarding demographic information accuracy and involves extensive use of complex computer systems and databases.

Responsibilities

• Contact NBS specimen submitters regarding missing or invalid demographic information.
• Coordinate and expedite delivery of specimen bundles to the testing laboratory.
• Manage the storage and destruction of specimens as required by law.
• Perform linking of first and second newborn screening specimens.
• Provide customer service to submitters, parents, and lab staff regarding specimen processing and issues.
• Participate in the safety program and comply with laboratory guidelines.

Requirements

• Experience working with external and internal customers.
• Ability to work hours other than 8 am - 5 pm, including weekends and holidays.
• Prefer experience in a clinical, research, or environmental laboratory.
• Microbiology and Chemistry coursework from an accredited institution is preferred.
• Experience in training, mentoring, or coaching staff is preferred.
