About the position

The NDT Inspector at Virgin Galactic plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and quality of aerospace components through non-destructive testing (NDT) methods. This position is integral to the Quality team, focusing on inspecting space flight system hardware and assemblies to meet stringent quality management system (QMS) requirements. The inspector will utilize various NDT techniques to evaluate and report on the acceptability of materials, contributing to the company's commitment to safety in human spaceflight.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects parts, sub-assemblies, and completed assemblies to determine acceptability according to written procedures.
  • Performs non-destructive tests on vehicle components following engineering definitions.
  • Utilizes NDT test equipment to interrogate hardware and structures, making decisions on their acceptability for continued use.
  • Practices safety behavior and Foreign Object Debris (FOD) awareness/prevention; adheres to regulatory protocols and rules.
  • Follows procedures and inspection techniques using various types of ultrasonic, eddy current, and fluorescent penetrant equipment.
  • Interprets and evaluates NDT results according to codes and standards.
  • Assists with the development of procedures and techniques for non-destructive testing of metallic and composite structures.
  • Reports and documents inspection results for traceability purposes.
  • Provides detailed reports to engineers and/or managers to communicate inspection results.
  • Performs process controls, sets up and calibrates equipment; maintains weekly inventory of equipment.
  • Completes assigned tasks accurately and timely in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Conducts work to enhance health and safety, product safety, and promote risk reduction.
  • Works on quality control assignments that require judgment in resolving issues or making recommendations.
  • Ensures quality and efficiency of installations, including troubleshooting and providing guidance in troubleshooting processes.
  • Communicates effectively with engineering, management, and production personnel regarding product acceptance criteria and inspection results.
  • Collaborates to achieve goals and complete assigned tasks.
  • Supports training of other NDT personnel using hands-on knowledge from the vehicles.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of three years' experience with aerospace parts and components in a manufacturing, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), or airline environment, with emphasis on prototype aircraft.
  • Successfully completed minimum training requirements defined in NAS 410, ATA 105, or ASNT-SNT-TC-1A for a Level 2 inspector in UT and PT.
  • Recent documented hours working as an NDT inspector and sufficient experience to be certified in accordance with NAS 410, ATA 105, or ASNT-SNT-TC-1A.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and communicate blueprints, specs, and other technical documents.
  • Strong working knowledge of composite aircraft and/or aerospace non-destructive testing processes in composite material.
  • Knowledge of AS9100 and other relevant aerospace industry standards and regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to use computer applications to follow manufacturing work instructions.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, blueprints, and/or models on paper or digital.
  • Experience with nonconforming material control processes.
  • Specific vision abilities to detect flaws or defects in materials.

Nice-to-haves

  • Training in other NDT methods.
  • Strong safety forward thinking and good housekeeping practices.
  • Experience on narrow body and/or business jet aircraft.
  • Experience with composite aircraft in commercial or military aerospace applications.
  • Proven hands-on inspection experience in the aerospace industry using precision measurement tools.
  • Basic math and technical writing skills.
  • Knowledge of current quality control practices and willingness to learn cutting-edge spacecraft quality techniques; Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) training preferred.
  • Ability to collaborate on quality inspection projects with fellow technicians or interdepartmental functions.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Familiarity with the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
