About the position

AS&M has an exciting opportunity for a Network Architect for the Avionic Gateway System to join the team in Houston, Texas. The Network Architect will support the Gateway Command and Data Handling (C&DH) System, which is a critical sub-system of the Gateway Program aimed at returning to the Moon. This role involves a variety of responsibilities including supporting network configuration, VLAN architecture, and Time Trigger Ethernet design and network integration. The Network Architect will also be involved in the development and procurement of hardware/software and interfaces related to FPGA/ASIC, as well as supporting Ethernet and Internet protocols for Quality of Service, network end systems, wired network switches, and wireless design. In addition to technical responsibilities, the Network Architect will review designs and create models for performance and reliability studies. They will support cybersecurity efforts, particularly the application of NIST 800-53 standards, and will be responsible for sub-project requirement and verification data packages to support architecture requirements, design, verification/validation, operations, and sustaining engineering. The role also includes participation in product life cycle reviews, coordinating integration, verification, and validation activities, and working with requirements to align with hardware specifications while understanding the verifications. The Network Architect will review verification and validation reports to ensure compliance with requirements and will participate in system requirements reviews, preliminary design reviews, and critical design reviews. Effective communication and organizational skills are essential, as the Network Architect will need to present schedules and progress to customers and work collaboratively within a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Gateway Command and Data Handling (C&DH) System.
  • Support network configuration, VLAN architecture, and Time Trigger Ethernet design and network integration.
  • Support FPGA/ASIC development and procurement of hardware/software and interfaces.
  • Support Ethernet protocols and Internet protocols for Quality of Service, network end systems, wired network switches, and wireless design.
  • Review design and create models for performance and reliability studies.
  • Support cybersecurity efforts including application of NIST 800-53 standards.
  • Support sub-project requirement and verification data packages to support architecture requirements, design, verification/validation, operations, and sustaining engineering.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in Engineering.
  • 5 - 10 years of related experience in engineering.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Ethernet network architecture and network hardware development.
  • Knowledge of spacecraft avionics and space hardware development.
  • Understanding of SE&I processes, methodologies, tools, and technologies.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, critical thinking process.
  • Good communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of IEEE 802.1, IEEE 802.3, ARINC 664-P7, and AS 6802 standards.
  • Network Certification (CCNP, CCAr, CompTIA Network+).
  • Knowledge of Avionic Hardware and/or Flight Processes/Paperwork.
  • Experience with NASA systems.
  • Experience with Flight Hardware and/or Flight Processes/Paperwork or prior working experience with Shuttle or International Space Station flight operations.
  • Familiarity with Hardware for Critical Network Timing Systems used in Command and Telemetry type systems.
  • Familiarity with Data Analysis, Data Recording, and Network Simulation Tools.
  • Experience with network automation tools and scripting languages (e.g., Python, Linux Bash Scripting).
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity frameworks and compliance standards (e.g., NIST, ISO 27001).
