About the position

The Physician Champion is responsible for fostering positive relationships with medical staff to support strategic business growth and objectives. This role involves collaborating with the Senior Network CDI Director to ensure effective execution of clinical documentation strategies, conducting concurrent reviews of patient medical records, and enhancing physician understanding of documentation practices.

Responsibilities

  • Establish a mechanism for concurrent review of inpatient medical records for accuracy and adequacy of physician documentation.
  • Create an environment that enhances communication within the medical record.
  • Improve the education and competence of Coding validators regarding clinical pathophysiology and physician documentation.
  • Support compliance efforts to assure accuracy in diagnosis coding, procedural coding, DRG assignment, and risk-adjusted reporting.
  • Maintain a review and reporting process for PSI Reviews, HAC Reviews, and Risk adjustment Score Elixhauser Reporting/Coding.
  • Communicate and educate the patient care team and clinical documentation team on ongoing regulatory changes.
  • Serve as a resource to physicians regarding DRG, SOI/ROM, ICD-10, and PCS information.
  • Facilitate ongoing education of staff on chart documentation improvement techniques.
  • Assist with physician engagement strategies to enhance understanding of the CDI program.
  • Coordinate with program leadership to summarize results at physician/medical staff meetings.
  • Engage in discussions with physicians to provide data and case examples for support.
  • Support organizational Quality goals through CDI improvements.
  • Coordinate with the CDI team to provide clinical documentation education to medical staff.
  • Partner with CDI leadership on physician responses to queries.

Requirements

  • 5 years recent experience in Clinical Practice required.
  • Minimum of three years of healthcare experience required, with a strong medical/surgical background.
  • Experience with Coding/DRG, billing, auditing, and reimbursement preferred.
  • Clinician preferred with a CDIP/CCDS/CCS credential.
  • High level of interpersonal and communication skills necessary to establish rapport with physicians and healthcare providers.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) is expected.
  • Chart review experience required.
  • Experience with Cerner Millennium Electronic Medical Record and 3M CDI Software preferred.
  • Regulatory background and DRG reimbursement knowledge preferred.
