About the position

The Clinical Documentation Improvement Lead Specialist plays a crucial role in enhancing the quality and completeness of clinical documentation within patient medical records. This position involves collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team, including CDI team members, physicians, and coding staff, to ensure accurate clinical information is captured, thereby reflecting the appropriate clinical severity for services rendered. The CDI Lead Specialist is responsible for onboarding new staff, conducting audits, providing education, and supporting departmental goals related to Clinical Documentation Improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts New CDI Specialist Onboarding & Education
  • Performs Staff risk adjustment audits, tracking and reviewing findings and trends
  • Assists management with preparing provider education materials and gathering information for presentations
  • Initiates and provides regular CDI education to team members based on trends and management needs
  • Reviews medical records concurrently to identify opportunities for clinical documentation improvement
  • Conducts real-time audits of reviews, queries, and reports, providing feedback on processes and compliance
  • Reviews data and trends to identify additional areas of opportunity
  • Conducts Validation and Special Project tasks to support the CDI Manager/Director
  • Functions as a Super User with CDI Software and other applications
  • Submits electronic queries to clinicians for accurate documentation
  • Ensures queries are compliant and free of errors
  • Provides follow-up on all queries
  • Submits ideas to improve workflow and productivity to management

Requirements

  • Minimum of five years of healthcare experience required
  • Strong medical/surgical background
  • Experience with Coding/DRG, billing, auditing, and reimbursement preferred
  • Clinician preferred with a CDIP/CCDS/CCS credential
  • Bachelor's degree in healthcare or related field required
  • Current/active RN license or ability to transfer license within three months of start
  • Thorough knowledge of clinical documentation strategies and hospital-acquired conditions
  • Good knowledge of healthcare delivery systems, utilization review, and quality improvement practices
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational, planning, and observation skills

  • Experience with Cerner Millennium Electronic Medical Record
  • Experience with 3M CDI Software
  • Regulatory background and DRG reimbursement knowledge
