About the position

The Network Development Engineer II role at Amazon focuses on building, deploying, and scaling the networks that support AWS and its customers across multiple global data centers. This position is integral to ensuring the stability and sustainability of next-generation IP networks, working within a diverse team of engineers and specialists to deliver high-quality network solutions and maintain operational excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Perform high quality network and/or systems operations, deployments, scaling, technology refresh, sustaining engineering, best practices application, optimization, and internal/external customer interactions.
  • Create and implement changes on the network.
  • Work closely with automation teams in defining the tools that allow scaling at a higher volume.
  • Lead network projects in network sustaining engineering, deployment/implementation, scaling, technology refresh, best practices application, and network optimization.
  • Sustain AWS's next generation networks by providing critical support to diagnose, mitigate impact, and resolve large-scale networking events.
  • Operate and troubleshoot network routing, interconnectivity, platforms, performance, and configuration issues.
  • Drive and support innovation from Top of Rack to the Network Border.
  • Partner with the broader Network/Infrastructure organization in network engineering and configurations standards.
  • Work closely with Network/Systems/Software Engineering teams to ensure smooth roll-out of new designs and products.
  • Maintain standards across the networking toolset and ensure compliance to those standards and policies.
  • Deliver simple, sustainable, and repeatable solutions and processes.
  • Collaborate with highest tier escalation engineers/resolvers.
  • Create and review documentation regarding network implementation/deployments, recurring issues, and new standard operating procedures.

Requirements

  • 4+ years experience in a network focused hands-on technical role working with IP routing protocols/technologies and platforms in large scale data center and/or WAN network environments.
  • 4+ years experience developing engineering, deployment, or operations mechanisms to support IP network and/or networking systems.
  • 4+ years experience in a technical on-call capacity, responding to customer impacting events, mitigating and root cause analysis of those events.
  • 1+ years of experience in automation via Bash/shell scripting and Perl/Python programming.

Nice-to-haves

  • Thorough understanding of TCP/IP networking, IP routing, Server Load Balancing, and Network Security architecture.
  • Experience with router, server load balancer, and firewall vendor platforms such as Cisco, Juniper, Alcatel-Lucent, Arista, Brocade, Extreme, Citrix, F5, Fortinet, Palo Alto.
  • In-depth knowledge of and experience with networking and/or systems technologies.
  • Knowledge of network hardware and packet forwarding architectures.
  • Possess Scripting skills or have desire to learn them; specifically Python, Perl, or Shell (bash, ksh, csh).
